Make some broad cuts with your bandsaw
1 Start with a 2?6?9" hardwood blank. (We selected highly figured tiger maple. See our Buying Guide for a source.) Make three copies of the full-size pattern shown on page 5. (Note: Resawing a 6"- wide blank requires a 14" band-saw. If you have a smaller band-saw, start with a smaller blank and reduce the pattern to a man-ageable size when you print it.)
Adhere one copy of the pattern to the blank face, orienting it with respect to the grain, as shown on the pattern. (To adhere our pat-terns, we used 3M Spray Mount, an aerosol adhesive you can buy at art-supply and craft stores.)
2 Fit your bandsaw with a sharp shape, keeping your blade outside the line and cutting wide around the tip of the star. Next, make the page 2, and carrier jig, as shown on attach the blank to it using double-faced carpet tape. Now, using your rip fence, bandsaw a slice off the bottom of the blank. (Note: If your blank is less than 2" thick, use a separate piece of stock for the bottom.
